Chattanooga Business Community Coming Together to Give Back

Gary McClendon, a former professional basketball player who played with the Harlem Magicians alongside the legendary Marcus Haynes, was born and raised in Chattanooga, TN. Gary has always given back to and is constantly looking for ways to give back to the community. Gary remembers when he played basketball with the Harlem Magicians and the smiles on the children’s faces when the team performed their basketball tricks and skits and he still remembers the first time he saw the Harlem Globetrotter’s perform when he was a child. Their performance had a lasting impression on him and later when he played with Marques Haynes, it was a dream come true for him.

When Gary saw the Harlem Globetrotter’s were coming to Chattanooga, he thought that’s the perfect event to for the children and their families who survived the recent Woodmore Elementary School bus crash. No matter what the circumstances for a brief period of time, watching the Harlem Globetrotters perform is bound to make you smile. Gary decided to purchase tickets to the game for the Woodmore Elementary children and other youth in the city. He discussed this idea with some local businesses and friends and the response has been more than amazing.

The local children had an exciting, fun and memorable night that will last a life time.

Of the 100 tickets, 62 were given to the children and families that survived the recent Woodmore Elementary School bus crash. The remaining were giving to other Chattanooga school children.

In a news exclusive, WDEF (News Channel 12) reported, “The Woodmore bus crash claimed 6 lives and the kids at Woodmore Elementary are still recovering, faculty members felt this would help take their mind off of things for a while.

Brenda Adamson-Cothran, the principal of Woodmore Elementary says, “I think it means a lot it’s important for them to be able to continue to do what they need to do to grieve the loss of their classmates and brothers and sisters but also to take time to get some rest time and care for themselves and have fun.”

“I saw the smiles on their face… the laughter… the fact that the team came down and took pictures with them. It was priceless.”
Someone once wrote, “Make what change you are able to make now, and let the ‘giving spirit’ spread like a virus, infinitely touching the lives of people you may never meet, across boundaries you may never cross, in ways you may never imagine. That is the power of giving and your ticket to changing the world.” Our business community and friends have a giving spirit and Gary would like to thank everyone who made this community initiative a big success.
